Observing a macro cell: an egg! (5th Grade)

Hello boys and girls!

In 5th Grade, we are learning about the cells.

Most of the cells are so tiny that are invisible to the human eye; we need a microscope to see them.

But, if we look at an unfertilized egg, we can see a cell! In fact, the YOLK (yellow part) is a single cell.

We could identify:

  • the cytoplasm (yellow)
  • the membrane (by smashing soflty the yolk)
  • the nucleus (a white spot in the cytoplasm)

Bones, part 1 (6th Grade)

Hello 6th Grade!

How are you?

This week, many of you brought bones in class in order to make an experiment.

First, we observed and classified them into LONG, SHORT or FLAT bones:

Then, we broke some of them in order to answer the question: What's inside a bone?

We found out that bones have BONE MARROW inside, which something related to blood cells, but we have to investigate a little more...

Finally, we put the bone into a glass jar and we filled it with vinegar...

Now, we are going to wait for a week.

What is going to happen????? Any hypothesis???

Cells (5th grade)

Hello boys and girls!

In 5th grade, we are learning about the cells.

We made cells using play doh, labelling all their parts.

Some the children decided to make a plant cell, some others an animal cell.

It was great fun!

Rethink your drink (4th Grade)

Good morning children!

How are you?

In 4th Grade, we have done a very interesting experiment. So, we decided to display it at the corridors of our school so that everybody could see it.

It is called: RETHINK YOUR DRINK.

First, we brought cans and bottles of the different drinks we usually drink. Then, we analyzed the components of every can or bottle paying special attention to the SUGAR.

We calculated how much sugar is there in every drink.

Finally, we made a poster:

It is shocking how much sugar we can drink every morning when we have breakfast without knowing it!

This led us to a very intense debate. We strongly recommend you to reflect on these pictures...

Optical Illusions (3rd grade)

Hello, 3rd Grade!

Today in class, we talked about the sense of SIGHT.

We know that the eyes are the organs of sight, and that they transmit the information to the brain. But sometimes they can trick our brain... For example, looking at...

Optical Illusions are pictures that trick the human eye into seeing something that is not real. Here you have some examples:

Duck or rabbit?
Old or young woman?

Indigenous of the Americas or Eskimo?
Which circle is bigger?

How many legs has the elephant got?

Frog or horse?
Front or side?

Is it really moving?
Wow!!! Painted on the floor!
Fascinating!

Just one more! Have a look at this TV advertisement:

How many cells have you got in your body? (5th grade)

Hello 5th grade!

How many cells have you got in your body?

With this question, we started the class today.

We found out that....

A tiny fruit fly has got...
A million cells!

A human being has got...
50-100 trillion cells!!!

And a large elephant has got...
A quadrillion cells!!!

But, bacteria have only got...
...1 cell!

Can you think of other living things?

Food Landscapes (4th grade)

Hello again 4th grade!

A good way to introduce our new topic is by visiting the work of Carl Warner, artist and photographer. He creates "Foodscapes", which are landscapes made with food. And here it comes, our first unit in the year: FOOD.
