The Skin (3rd Grade)

Good morning 3rd Grade!

Let's learn about the sense of TOUCH.

The SKIN is the organ of TOUCH.

Do you want to know how it works?

STEM Challenge #5: Map your brain!

Hi, children!

In 3rd Grade, we are learning about our senses, so this challenge is focused on the sense of TOUCH.

We wanted to know which body parts are more sensitive and we found an experiment developed by Dr. Rebekah Corlew and Theo Walker of the Fitzpatrick Lab at the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience. This experiment is called The Homunculus Mapper.

https://www.maxplanckflorida.org/fitzpatricklab/homunculus/
First, we made this card:

Then, in pairs, we took measurements:
  1. The tested pupil should close their eyes.
  2. The tester pupil should press 2 points of the card against the skin of the subject and ask if they feel one point or two points. The tested body parts are: HEAD, BACK, ARMS, HANDS, LEGS and FEET.
  3. Start with the largest distance and keep testing smaller and smaller distances until the subject indicates that they feel one point.
  4. Record these distances.
  5. Enter these numbers on brainmapper.org.

Finally, we entered our results on the web. The more sensitive parts looked larger and the less sensitive parts looked smaller. This is how "our brain thinks we are". For example:

It was an interesting experiment and very easy to do at home ;)

How old are your ears? (3rd Grade)

Hello 3rd Grade!

As promised, I share here the video watched in class, in which we tested our sense of hearing.

Try to do it at home and also test your family!

STEM Challenge #4: Protecting your sight!

Hi, everyone!

After learning about the sense of sight (parts of the eye, functions, etc.), we challenged our 3rd Grade students with a new STEM challenge:

"Create a device to protect your eyes from the sun and sweat".

Criteria and restrictions:

  • You must be able to see perfectly.
  • You can not touch the device while wearing it.
  • You can only use the materials provided.

Building time: 40 minutes.

Materials:

3D Glasses (6th Grade)

Good evening!

Pupils of 6th Grade created our own 3D glasses as a Science project.

What we needed:

  • A 3D glasses template (downloaded from Internet)
  • A piece of card stock
  • Red and blue cellophane
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Remember that the blue cellophane goes on the right eye.

It was easy and we all enjoyed watching 3D books and films.

This type of 3D glasses can be used for watching specially designed images called Anaglyphs.
So, we decided to create our Anaglyph images:

And this was our last Science Project this year. Good job, kids!

Hearing and sounds (6th Grade)

Hello children!

In 6th Grade, we are revising the senses. We did a couple of experiments that you can do at home. They're easy, clear and fun.

MATERIALS:

EXPERIMENT 1:                                   EXPERIMENT 2:
              - A wire clothes hanger                                    - A can
                          - 2 strings                                          - A balloon
                    - Some salt / sugar               - Something to make strong noise
(we used a cover pan and a spoon)

EXPERIMENT 1:

- Make noise with the hanger (for example hitting it to a table) and listen.
- Make the same noise again but this time listen through the strings:

You will hear a strong GONG!

That's because the sound waves can travel through air, liquids and solids. When we listen to the hanger through the strings, we receive this information through a solid. And solids can transmit sounds better than gases:

1- Solids
2- Liquids
3- Air

EXPERIMENT 2:

We built an EAR DRUM with a can and a balloon to understand how it vibrates with sounds:

Optical Illusions (3rd grade)

Hello, 3rd Grade!

Today in class, we talked about the sense of SIGHT.

We know that the eyes are the organs of sight, and that they transmit the information to the brain. But sometimes they can trick our brain... For example, looking at...

Optical Illusions are pictures that trick the human eye into seeing something that is not real. Here you have some examples:

Duck or rabbit?
Old or young woman?

Indigenous of the Americas or Eskimo?
Which circle is bigger?

How many legs has the elephant got?

Frog or horse?
Front or side?

Is it really moving?
Wow!!! Painted on the floor!
Fascinating!

Just one more! Have a look at this TV advertisement:

Our senses (3rd Grade)

Hello boys and girls of 3rd Grade!

Welcome to the Science Blog!

In unit 1, we are goint to learn very interesting facts about OUR SENSES. Let's start with a video and a song!

Hearing (3rd grade)

Hello!
Today, in class we talked about the sense of HEARING.

Thank you Guerau, for bringing this ear, showing its different parts and explaining how we perceive sounds. It's been really interesting!

Remember that in the "3rd Grade" section you have some HEARING games and videos to learn at home:

Our Senses: experiments (3rd Grade)

Hello and welcome everyone!

Science is a new subject for boys and girls of 3rd Grade, but don't worry, everything is great!

Our first unit is Our Senses, which is very motivationg because it allows us to experiment a lot!

We exercised our senses and, for example, talking about the sense of SIGHT, we found out that some images can trick our eyes and brain. They are called "Optical Illusions", like these below:

Are they really moving???

Also, we experimented with SMELL and TASTE.

With our eyes closed, we tried to guess things we were smelling:

Some of the children proved to have a great sense of smell!

Then, we tasted some food in order to learn the four basic tastes:

SWEET - SALTY - SOUR - BITTER

Oops!!! Lemon is sour!
