Why do snakes shed their skin?

Snakes shed their skin because of 2 reasons:

• The snake's skin doesn't grow as the animal grows.
• To remove parasites attached to their old skin.

How often do they shed skin? 

Well, it depends on the age and the species. 

• Younger snakes usually shed their skin every 2 weeks, because they are actively growing.
• Older snakes usually shed their skin twice (2 times) a year.

How are you? Did you know this big reptile? It is the Komodo Dragon, the largest lizard in the world!

We are going to watch this video in class, in order to answer a short questionnaire later. It is about Sonny, a komodo dragon that lives in the zoo of San Diego (California, USA).

Hello, how are you?

Have you ever wondered which animals live in the savanna? How's the weather in the North Pole? Where is the largest tropical rainforest on Earth? What will happen to coral reefs in 50 years time? Which % of the Earth is covered by water? Who is on top of the food chain in a forest? 

Children of 6th have studied some BIOMES of the world (or ecosystems) and they have made a project in small groups. Here you can see their Power Points, read by them. We hope you enjoy them!

Plants (5th Grade)

Hello boys and girls!

We have just finished Unit 2, which is about plants. And we have learnt a lot, haven't we???

Do you remember when we planted white beans? At first, we had some problems with the soil and the lack of sunlight (it was always foggy!), but finally we could grow our plants succesfully!

Some days later....

Sunlight is essential for the photosynthesis process.

We observed carefully our plant, using magnifying glasses in order to watch them better.

We also made some experiments. For example, we put one plant in a cupboard, so that it couldn't get any sunlight. We found out that it grew but it was weaker and yellow - it lacked chlorophyll.

We also wanted to learn more about the parts of a flower. So, we observed them through the microscope:

Here, we can see the stigma and the ovary with some ovules inside. They are female parts of the plant.

This is the anther, which carries the pollen. It is a male part of the plant.

Let's start a new term, with loaded batteries and lot's of new things to learn!

A cute Christmas paper experiment (3rd grade)

Hello boys and gisrls of 3rd grade!

What a lovely lesson we've had today, don't you think? I am very happy with the experiment we tried in the Science class. It was pretty simple but also fascinating! Let's follow the steps again:

1. Cut this Star-flower (the name we have given it :-P).

2. Fold the petals inside.

3. Colour them (only the outside part). Remember: use coloured pencils (not felt-tips).

4. Open the petals and write secretly a Christmas wish for your friend inside. 

5. Fold the petals again and give your star-flower to a friend. Tell him/her not to open it yet!

6. Place the folded flowers in a bowl with water and watch them unfold. Nice! Now, the Christmas wish is revealed :)
